Lager kit recommendation?

Post by Curious Brew » Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:53 pm

After a recommendation for a good lager kit...

I don't have the ability to actually "lager" so will it be okay at normal temperatures, and aren't they actually formulated for that in the first place?

Would bottling give a superior result to kegging?

50/50 light DME/sugar better?

New to this lager thing so any help gratefully received. 8)

I can recommend any of the Cooper's Lager type kits, the Heritage Lager I have on supping is particularly good, and all are quite happy at ale temperatures with the supplied yeast.

I would go for 50-75% Light Spraymalt, make the rest up with Glucose. I find 100% Spraymalt makes a drink which is a little 'heavy' in mouthfeel for my taste, compared to a commercial lager.

Bottling gives better carbonation, I think you need it for lager.

The best tip I can give you for improving a kit lager is adding some hops for extra hop flavour and aroma. Saaz (my favourite) and Halletaur are useful varieties, and I would normally add 30g or so to the Cooper's kit, more if the hops are not so fresh. You could always experiment with less initially if you're not feeling so brave, but I find all of the lager kits really benefit from some hop addition.

After emptying the extract into the fermenter, rinse out the kit can with two can fulls of boiling water into a pan. Add perhaps 1/3rd of the quantity of hops and boil for 10-15 minutes, then take off the boil and add the remaining 2/3rds to steep for 20-30 minutes. Strain and add to the wort.

I second the Coopers suggestion, but I have only tried the Mexican one. Brewed it twice with the ale yeast and its very nice.

Got Youngs Lager conditioning just now and opened a bottle after a week. Very nice too.

Bottling is the way to go for lager, that's how I look at it for carbonation levels.

Not looking forward to washing the bottles but thanks for the info.

Looks like I'll fit in my stout and a lager kit before I start thinking about Christmas.

Same here.... I'm running low I think..... I have 31 Grolsh bottles and a 2ltr Aussie Bitter , 4.5 ltrs flat Lager (will 'lemonade top' ok though), and 3 bottles of the Muntons IPA left in the garage........ I need to build up a better stock...
I have the Pilsner going at the mo, as soon as that is out the FV I'll start the Stonewall bitter, then maybe do another IPA THEN start the Christmas Ale....

I'd go for 100% enhancer, that's 50/50 brewing sugar and spraymalt as it is. I wouldn't go any lower in spraymalt than that.

Currently have a Coopers bavarian lager now called Coopers Europeian lager fermenting in the garage for the last 17 days its currently down to 1012 and still fermenting slowley which is good garage is a general temp of 16 deg C, Had a taste of the draw off I used for the gravity check it looks like lager smalls like lager and suprise tastes like lager. One bonus i currently have is doing a 210 mile round trip for work means im to tyred to actually do anything with my brews during the week so it's weekends only means my brews dont get messed with to much during the week, The Coopers lager will now have to sit until Saturday where I am hoping it will be ready to keg as im going to dabble in an all grain with the wife on Sunday which will be a TEA for ease and something we should both enjoy.
