Strange foam on wherry - infection?

Post by bevanjon74 » Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:49 am

Hi all

All has been going well with my Wherry in the FV - nice head on it after a couple of days, bubbling away nicely.. now after 4 days it has stopped, the head has subsided and been replaced by what I can only describe as a "scum" with bug bubbles and brownish floating chunks on the surface.
It all smells ok, and the gravity has gone down to around 1012, which would suggest that it has ended fermentation. (which looking at this forum is a strange happening in itself for a wherry kit!)
Will this scum/brown floaters subside and sink like all my other brews over the next few days? (I intend to follow the rules and leave it for 10 days before I bottle) or has something horrid happened like an infection??
I've never seen this before, but then again this is my first Woodfordes kit and it might be normal....
Any suggestions of what to do to check if its off or not to set my mind at rest??? - I was really looking forward to this wherry........
Thanks in advance

It sounds okay, the brown lumps are just dead yeast. You should find that anything floating on the surface will tend to adhere to the side of the fermenter as the beer is drawn off.

If the gravity has been stable for a few days, then it's ready to keg/bottle. The only reason to wait is if you wish the beer to clear down a bit first, but I try not to leave it on the dead yeast any longer than necessary - I've made that mistake before.
