wine bottles

Post by randomdave » Fri Oct 10, 2008 6:56 pm

Ive just done a coopers Lager and bottled it in old lager bottles. We have some wine bottles kicking around with screw top caps. I was curious as to if I could have used those to bottle? The glass is pretty much the same as a standard beer bottle. I know some answers will be "Wine isnt carbonated so it could go boom"

Im just wondering if anyone else has done it? If not ill save em for when i try my hand at wine making. :D

Cheers

I doubt screw top wine bottles would hold the pressure. As you said if they did they could go boom, beer bottles go boom too if they are not the right sort, super market beer is carbonated to perfection and bottles have tolerance for that carbonation. Homebrew can really get up some pressure and will exploded beer bottles easily if the new type and wine bottles with venom. Cider bottles (magners and bulmers) are ideal as are bottle conditioned beers.

If you had have seen the carnage caused by an expolding bottle we would not even be discussing this, they are very loud and 4" shards of glass flying in every direction at high velocity are not worth it; not to mention the loss of beer.

yeah I didnt think they would be up to much. I currently have it in 11 peroni beer bottles and 6 pet bottles cos i havent had chance to get my bulmers bottle from the boozer i frequent.

Thanks for the reply :D
