Why's my beer not clearing...in the keg?

Post by Jaoqua » Fri Oct 17, 2008 8:44 pm

My Cooper's IPA was brewed about a month ago. I bottled half of it from the FV (cos I only had 11 1L bottles) and the rest I kegged. Well, the bottles dropped bright in about 4-5 days, and it's them I'm now drinking. But the keg hasn't cleared well. It's drinkable, but it IS very cloudy.

This is only my second brew. Brew 1 was just kegged and that stayed really cloudy even after I added gelatine.

So what is the problem? Can you think of anything stupid I'm doing? The bottles dropped bright so quickly and so well that I can't imagine why the keg hasn't.

Incidentally the bottles were done one week before the keg was; there was still some of brew 1 in the keg! Could this be a relevant fact?

Could it just be that when you bottled some, you drew off the top of the beer that had less yeast in it?

Well, maybe, but the difference is profound. All 11 bottles are as clear as a commercial beer. They look great. With Brew 1 there was a yeast residue actually in the tap when I looked, but there doesn't seem to be in brew 2. Hard to be absolutely sure while there's still beer in the keg though.

In a way I'd like to filter my beer to get the yeast out. I think I'll add another post about that.

I wouldn't filter, personally. Were the bottles put in the fridge? - this could explain why they cleared quicker than the keg.

Nope. Bottles and keg were both primed with 1/2 tsp sugar per pint then put in the garage. That has got progressively colder over the last month, as we've all noticed.

I have exactly the same problem.

IPA or Lager does not clear for me, even after 6 odd weeks it is still cloudy, depsite bottling some that clears in less then a week.

I appreciate the keg is bigger but surely after nearly two months it should be clear at the top. Even after using finings?

Im only using my keg for Stout now, the darkness hides any yeast.
