Youngs Brewbelt Instruction

Invested in a Youngs Brewbelt this weekend as the ambient room temp has drop a few degrees. I seem to have misplaced the instruction sheet that came with the belt.

The instruction sheet gave a list of 3 positions to place the belt on the bucket in accordance to the room temperature.

Has anyone an got the instruction sheet for a Youngs Brewbelt?

Is there a general rule of thumb.... like, higher the belt to lower the temperature and lower the belt to increase the temperature!

If you're absolutely sure you want to use it my suggestion would be to put it half way up your fermenter, and make sure your fermenter has plenty of breathing space all around. I'd only leave it on a couple of days maximum as well. Keep checking the temperature of your brew if you can.

Emailed em already... no reply as yet. Will probably turn my Brewbelt off in the day after reading your previous post.

Took some temperature readings this morning after the belt had been on all night.

I have the belt half way up the bin.
Strip thermometer on the lid 23.5
Strip thermometer on the bin 1 inch from the bottom of the bucket 21.5
Stuck a probe into the centre of the brew through the airlock grommet and got a reading of 25.7

not that i can comment on brew belts, however if you do need to warm your brew in the loft with some control have you tried an aquarium heater?

Got the instructions I needed from Youngs. Directions for use quoted below for reference.

Good morning Dave,

You need to maintain the temperature between 20C and 24C for beer.

Moving the Belt up the vessel will lower the temperature and lowering the Belt will increase the temperature.
Below shows the height that the Belt should be at four different room/environment temperatures.

5C to 16C. 1.1/2ins from the bottom of your fermenter
16C to 20C. 4 from the bottom of your fermenter.
21C to 24C. Half way up the fermenter.

Temps over 24C - switch off the belt completely until the temp falls below 24C.

Sounds a bit 'hit and miss' to me. I use a fish tank heater (£12 from my local aquatic centre) with a thermometer. My brew has been at a steady 22c since shortly after pitching.

If I were to use a brewbelt again I would get a cheap plug in timer and set it up probably for night time. I don`t like the idea of putting it directly onto the FV either. I would wrap something like a towel round first and then put the belt on top of that and set the timer on something like 30 minutes on and 30 off through the night or similar to try and maintain a more constant temperature rather than have it on all the time as I think they get too hot.
