seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
folks, my 3rd brew was a coopers euro lager. my friend gave me a pressure keg he had in his garage for around 15 yrs. i took it home and cleaned it out and bought a new tap and a 2". S 20. cap and a hambleton bard super 20 co2 cylinder.
the lager fermented spot on and i decided to keg it and keep it for a christmas brew.
last night i came in from work and noticed the cap had split open around the rim.
it`s been in the keg for around 5 weeks now and really pissing me off.
i thought these valves where meant to inject co2 in to the keg and at the same time release a build up of pressure from the keg?.
i`m returning the cap tomorrow to the hb shop in glasgow.
any thought on this?
cheers,
pissed and pissed off,
willie.

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Be focked off
, that's cool. Don't let them grind you down though.
Still time to chuck something on for chrimbo, how about a mild...fewer hops/hoppiness means quicker maturation. Don't aim for a high ABV either though, but there's still time
.
Or if what you want to do is a lager, mentally commit to forgetting about Chrimbo, but brew it now, enjoy brewing it, bottle it, and have a party at the end of Jan when everyones skint and become Mr Popular, the man with beer!

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't you put on a new cap, purge it a few times of O2 and go again? Or grab a King Keg from someone cheap? Or bottle?
Surely this is salvagable?

i was thinking that, williamoid... how long has it been split? do you know?fivetide wrote: Surely this is salvagable?
if it was the max (5 weeks) then it may be a bit buggered, if recently then you may get away with bottling/getting another lid pronto.

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Both my barrels have a pressure release valve as well as the gas injector bit.
I have seen you can buy them to add to a lid. The HB caps come with one fitted.
I have always tightened my lids fully and relied on these valves. Must be some pressure to crack a lid. I'm not an expert so I am just making my observations .. someone may correct me. BUT would this kind of pressure not have also exploded a bottle?

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had King Keg lids split in the past.
From memory they all split during winter months when the temperature dropped. I think that my lids split due to expansion / contraction and not as a result of excessive pressure.

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there is a manufaturing problem with these lids
YOUNGS the wholeseller has been told many many times
BUT wont recall them
Its as though the threads are a little too deep and people tend to screw them right down which causes the split in the cap
happens to Both the Plain Vent cap type and ones with the S30 valves fitted

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
folks, i took back the cracked cap to the hb shop, the lady gave me a new cap and told me to swap the valve onto it. and that my lager would be fine, just to give it a injection of co2. so when i got home (after a pub crawl in partick) i swapped the valve, tightened it up and put it on the barrel. i then screwed on the gas for a second or two and it started to escaping through the seal of the valve (which i screwed on tightly with pliers and a grip) i thought "you focking bustard". i then tried the lager and it was as flat as the head of a nail. so in a rage i tipped the lot down the sink. i`ve had a finlandia cider bubbling away nicely for 6 days now which is comforting. i`m going to stick to bottles until i buy a cornie.
thanks for all your comms lads,
willie.

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never had to tighten up a top with pliers to get a seal. A smear of vaseline (other petroleum jelly products are available) usually does the trick for me.
Still, its gone to meet its maker now - pity!

Re: seriously focked off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, I agree.... vaseline on the 'o' ring AND threadmakes the sealing much easier.
