Milky Yeast - No Head

Post by scottish69 » Mon Nov 24, 2008 4:45 pm

Hi all,

Just doing a brewferm grand cru, made up my yeast in half a cup of water (no sugar or anything), but even 15 minutes later theres no head on the yeast. I pitched it anyway, kind of milky when i did. Its the standard yeast that came with the kit, ive also added some yeast vit to the brew to help things along.

Does the yeast sound like its ok? NOrmally i thought you get a small bit of froth on it before pitching?

Ive got a back up Brewferm Blanche packet of yeast just in case....

Cheers guys!

Hi Scot, i wouldn,t have thought 15mins is long enough to tell whether a yeast is viable or not-however as you have already pitched you should see signs of fermentation within 24hrs as long as the ambient temp. is in the 18/25 degree range

I'll have a look tomorrow night and see if theres a head on it.

I'll report back.

Well i checked the gravity of my beer after the first 24 hours of ferment - its gone down from 1072 to 1050... so im guessing this means the yeast is ok. Theres a decent head and the remnants of what looks like even more vigorous fermentation up the sides of the vessel.

So this should be ok then?!

Relax, its working. Yeast doesnt have to start foaming to mean its okay, some do ,some don`t.
