How do I get my Spraymalt to dissolve? HELP, QUICK!!

Post by farmhousekeg » Sun Nov 30, 2008 3:06 pm

Hi....I have an URGENT problem with my spraymalt!!

I have just made up a Coopers Stout kit and added 1kg of Dark Spraymalt instead of sugar. I sprinkled it onto the wort as per instructions while stirring continuously. I got some lumps forming but thought I had got rid of them all. Now after 30 minutes in the FV it looks like there is a thick 1cm layer of Spraymalt in the bottom of my FV!!! Is this normal? I have never tried spraymalt before.

Should I stir it up again (yeast is now added).

Will the malt be digested by the yeast?

Are the sugars already dissolved?

What about the SG? I couldn't test it as I dropped and broke my Hydrometer this morning. SWMBO has gone to Wilko's for a new one.....bless 'er.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Sanitise a big spoon, or even a rolling pin, and use it to break the lumps up a bit. They should gradually dissolve as the yeasties eat the sugar anyway.

Edit....thanks for the mega quick response. I did this just after I posted and it seems the sediment is pretty fine stuff, so I am hopefully not in too much bother. Gave it a stir and will keep an eye on it for the next few hours and gently stir again if needed.

Thanks again, good to know someone is "out there "!!

...surfing for potential Christmas present list. What can I ask so-and-so for? A home-brewing book from Amazon of course (makes list of thirteen books he wants plus a cheese-making book #-o )

...putting-off going out into a cold garage to cut a hole in the top of a (legit) stainless cask to turn it into a boiler.

...ordering screws and things from Screwfix.

...reading most of JBK (according to the TC-making department) :D

Farmhousekeg, the best way to mix spraymalt is to add it to lukewarm water in a pan, add the spraymalt, then bring it to the boil, as seen here. This prevents the "clumping", then you can mix it with your kit.

Gents, many thanks for the answers. A great help and I will employ your advice on the next kit, which by the sound of the reputation of the Coopers Stout kit, is likely to be soon! :)

SWMBO has returned with a new hydrometer and the OG of a little sample I saved is 1043 at 16 degrees, so that's translates to about 1042 I think? Right?

I tried mixing mine in a jug of cold water. Sprinkle on top and mix as you add it. Works fine. Then add to brew.
I had the same problem of clumping when adding straight to the bucket.
