Pressure Keg Beer - How long will it last?

Post by davvac » Thu Dec 11, 2008 3:45 pm

Hi all

I've got my first brew in the keg, conditioning ready for Christmas. I have the CO2 kit ready, but it occurred to me that the beer would probably last a few days in a cool place without added gas. I suspect with my friends and family we could get through it in 2 or 3 days. However when I buy small quantities of 'bright' ale from my local breweries (Tring and Chiltern - lucky me), it needs drinking up within 24 hrs.

Does anyone know from experience how quickly the beer would oxidise if I just open the cap whilst pouring and don't use the CO2?

Cheers

Dave

Probably within a couple of days. However, I'd be more concerned about drinking 'flat' beer using that method. If you keep it under CO2 pressure it should retain its carbonation.

Thanks Parva

I'm looking for a reasonably flat real ale style beer, but I do like a little life in it.

I guess it's no biggie to just blast some CO2 in as we drink down the keg. I imagine this may prolong the life of the beer as well.

Cheers

Apologies for changing the subject slightly. I have sampled the delights of the Tring Brewery many times, but the Chiltern Brewery has thus far eluded me. Do they offer a tasty brew? I am particularly fond of Tring Blonde and Side Pocket for a Toad.

Hi Clatters

Their two "everday" beers are Chiltern Ale and Beechwood Bitter - sub 4% and 4.5% ish respectively.

Nice stuff, but Tring produce a much wider range of beers in different styles. Once their brewery shop opened I was converted. Plus it's nearer home for me.

If you get the chance try their Mansion Mild, it's superb! Only one bottled beer though at the moment compared to Chiltern's 4 or 5.

Hmm that gets me thinking about the next brew... Anyone know a good Mild kit?

Cheers
