20 litre F.V

Post by sam c » Thu Dec 11, 2008 1:48 pm

hi again,

about to start brewing but have only got a 20 litre F.V. im in thailand and have been trying to find something suitible but cant. i am planning on brewing HB larger supreme and ausie pale ale. larger makes 22 litres and pale ale makes 23 litres. i am planning to reduce them both to 19 litres to up the percentage a little and so it fits in the F.V.

first off, do you think it will be ok to reduce them this amount?

and is 1 litre of space left in the F.V enough room for the foam produced durring fermentation? or will this cause problems?

also is it posibble to mix all the malt exract, hops and sugar together then sperate it into two F.V's and then split the yeast into two and add it to both worts?

any answers would be good, thanks

I have on many occasions reduced the amount of water in a brew to up the %. Nothing wrong with doing that, but i'd leave maybe two litres minimum space up top for foam.

Reducing the water will be fine or you could invest a whopping £8 and buy a 5 gallon/23 litre FV :

(it holds more so you can brew a full 3 litres with room for froth).

yes im affraid no where in thailand to spend a whopping £8 on a 23 litre fv. the one ive got is the best i could find as it has a tap fitted already. does anyone know how risky it would be (infection wise) for the crust to spill out of the airlock for a couple of days? thanks for all the previuos answers.

Don`t know how in hell your gonna find somewhere cool enough out there to brew, especially a lager, hope you`ve got very efficient air con. I know that plastic storage bins are plentiful there cos my missus is from that part of the world and she`s got a few to store rice and stuff in, its just that you need to measure and mark out on the side the various volumes, 5, 10, 15 ,20 litre steps for example. FWIW I rarely make a kit up beyond 20 litres, I always think the manufacturers are being a bit optimistic when they say "makes 40 pints".

i've already got a 20 litre water bottle with a tap on it which i have marked 2,4,6,8 and so on litres on. some one suggested to me on this fantastic forum to rap the fv with wet towels which has brought the temp down to around 21 c. not ideal but i am still experimenting.my only problem is that i only have a 1 litre of space for the crust, so it will be spilling out of the airlock. not sure if this is a big deal or not?

as for chang, i dont know what the f*** they put in it, but i had a couple last night and now my head hurts!!
