Whisky beer

Post by chopperswookie » Sun Jan 18, 2009 9:46 pm

i have been given a bottle of whisky as a belated christmas gift of one of my old work mates today and i was thinking could i use it to improve/impart the flavour an ale? i have had a look through the forum and someone suggested soaking a wooden block in it and then add it to the barrel. does that work? or could i just say boil a bottle in a pan for a bit with some water or the reminents of a can of wort boil it for a bit and then add it to primary? i'm not after loopy juice or anything like that, just a different and interesting beer.

I think thats a very interesting idea. I am a big whisky fan so would be interested in the taste. Whisky gets its complexity and taste from the wood its stored in (ok and the distillation method), so I am not sure if it would do a great deal in the FV or conditioning phase but I would definitely be interested in the results.

Maybe you could try adding a few drops to a couple of bottles at the bottling stage?

Tried a beer with whisky in it a couple of years ago in a whether spoons beer festival. think it might of been this one;

“Highland Whisky Ale (4.6%): Half a bottle of whisky goes in every firkin at the brewery and the result is a malty beer with, unsurprisingly, a pleasant, warm finish.”

I thought they went together well might try to make a cheep kit with extra hops and half a bottle of whisky my self. Then again if it was a good whisky id think that it was a crime to “waste” it in a brew.

Do it this way. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Swig beer, swig whiskey. Whiskey should be gone & so should you, under the table.

what emyrjones88 said is what i was looking for. but i don't think i will bother. it was just an idea and i seriously don't think it will work and i don't fancy ruining a perfectly good brew. cheers for the answers and advice chaps. i'll think of some other hairbrained scheme soon!

Brewdog do a range of imperial stout called Paradox, which are aged in whisky barrels. Very nice they are too. Maybe Whisky soaked Oak chips in a muslin bag for a week or two in a secondary before bottling?
