WHEN SHOULD I CARBONATE WHEN USING A CORNY KEG

Post by andysmok » Sun Jan 25, 2009 12:34 pm

Hi,
I have just got myself 2 corny kegs and all the set up needed. i am unsure when to carbonate my beer. Do i leave the beer flat in the keg for the conditioning period or should i carbonate the beer then leave it to condition. if the second method is the best do i need to leave the c02 permently on whilst the conditioning takes place or can i carbonate and then unhook the gas to leave for conditioning.

Thanks for any advise

When I keg beer I always immediately pressure the keg to about 20 PSI to make sure the lid has sealed. One of my lids is a bit tempremental so I have to lift the keg off the floor with the lid handle and apply gas at the same time! Then I give it a couple of hours for the CO2 to settle and then lift the release valve to purge any air and to lower the pressure to about 5 PSI.

To carbonate, after a few weeks conditioning I attach the gas, take the pressure up to the carbonating pressure (20 or 30 PSI) then disconnect the gas. I check the pressure every couple of days and add more gas if necessary.
