Having been brewing for the last year with successes with Coopers pilsner larger and Coopers Austrailian larger I thought I'd try a bitter for a change.
All went well Put 20 pints into a barrel and the rest into 20 bottles.
The barrel came out spot on after about 8 weeks but upon opening the bottles they are to fizzy and lift the sediment almost straight away.
What have I done wrong as I only put 1/2 a tea-spoon of sugar into each bottle.
Woodford's Best Bitter too fizzy in bottles ???
Half a teaspoon of sugar is fine, I can only suggest that they have maybe been kept too warm and have continued fermenting like mad, I squirrelled away a couple of bottles from most of my earlier brews and when I came to open them, the majority of them had, like yours, massively overcarbonated, the ones I opened before were ok.
The fridge trick works a treat.
I had some 'well primed' bottles of Nelson's Revenge.
I found an hour or two in the fridge allowed me to be able to decant into a 1 litre jug before pouring into pint glasses.
The act of decanting and repouring also gets rid of some of the gas, leaving you with a sparkling beer with a nice frothy head!
