Woodfordes Wherry Flat

Post by chopperswookie » Fri Jan 30, 2009 7:54 pm

i barrelled a woodfordes wherry on the 7th Jan with about 80g of sugar. after a week i transfered it to the "outhouse". (i live in a flat and its a cupboard in the stair way thats full of stuff) i have brought it in and had a try because i was thinking of having it next weekend. opened the tap and after an initial squirt it took the dreaded "gulp"! this was only after about a quarter of a pint. so i stopped. having tasted the beer it tastes fine but cloudy. not floating yeasties either. will bringing it into the warm, my kitchen, for a week or so bring it to life?

another option i was thinking was to open it and bottle it into 2litre pet bottles (the only ones i have) but it wouldn't be ready for mext weekend or would it? i was thinking i could treat the last couple of weeks as "secondary".

any suggestions gratefully recieved!

Depending on whether that "gulp" sucked in beer spoiling bacteria you may be fine. It could be that due to the cold it stopped fermenting the priming sugar. Bringing it into the warm may help the situation by reactivating the yeast and so start creating c02 again. Give it a few days and see how it is. Also, the cloudiness without yeast deposits is probably down to a chill haze so its back to what I said about it being too cold.

I wouldn't try and bottle it now as it's sure to oxidise it, just leave it in the warm for a few days and check it.

Did you check before your transferred to the outhouse that you had pressure in the keg? If you didn't check then perhaps your keg wasn't holding pressure. Common problem with KK.

to be honest no. i'm using a standard youngs budget barrell and if this one does go pear shaped its the second new barrell i have bought that is a duff one. its in the kitchen now so lets see.

right. still no pressure......it pours about two centimetres of beer before the dreaded gulp. should i just forget it, unscrew the top and start pouring to see how long it lasts (and have a bloody good weekend in the process) or just leave it and check it in a month or so? should have changed this to a thread with a vote!

if i do go through the first route after it is empty, i was thinking to see if it has a leek and i put it in a bath of water, bit like the olde bike tyre puncture trick, to see if there are any loose seals etc

thought what the hell, opened the barrell, the seal was perfect so the washer hasn't gone there. what i am going to do is have a few pints, gravity driven, then add some more sugar and leave it for a bit to see if it will carbonate or i have just bought a duff budget barrell for the second time!! i think i will be bottling further ales in the future!
