Hard water is ideal for brewing ale, after all it is no accident that brewing has been the major industry in Burton-on-Trent where the water is very hard.

My local tap water is also very hard and is excellent for the real ales that I brew.

Save you money not buying bottled water and put it towards your next brew ingredients.

It's true that hard water makes many great beers. It all depends on the beer style you are brewing.
Many people do brew with bottled water and the most popular choice is Asda Smart Price STILL water, about 13 pence per 2 litres atm. Don't use the sparkling water.

The empty bottles are suitable for putting your beer in with two reservations:

1. The beer should be consumed within 6 months. Tiny amounts of air will permeate through the plastic and will eventually oxidise your beer.
2. The bottles should be stored in the dark to avoid "skunking". That's why most beer bottles are dark brown.
