Coopers Brewmaster Pilsner

Post by BWT » Thu Mar 12, 2009 8:55 pm

Evening one and all
As the title suggests i have aB/M Pilsner in the fermentor it has been fermenting away now for just over 3 weeks at between 12-16c and is now down to 1.01 so ready for bottling. The question i have as this is a lager do i bottle it and keep it in a warm place for a week or do i stick it in the garage (at between 5&6c) and leave it there for weeks to "lager"? As you can see i dont understand the principle of lagering perhaps one of you kind people could answer the question and give me simple guide to lagering
Many thanks

You could rack it to a secondary and store it (lager it) for a month or so at a steadily decreasing temperature range (5 - 0 C) or you could even get it to -1C for a few days. The cold temps are to allow the cold sensitive proteins to drop out. Once the lager is crystal clear, bottle it and lager for another month to carb up or put the beer in a corny and gas it up where it will be ready to drink at once.

Morning Brysie
Re the yeast i simply used the yeast supplied which i beleive to be a proper lager yeast. The fermentation has taken slightly over three weeks the hydrometer is now steady so going to bottle today still need to know whether to leave in the dining room or stick it up in the loft any ideas

nice one. :D

i reckon it needs to be kept at the same sort of temperature for a week or so, then put somewhere cool to condition.
i might be wrong but if you put it in the cold straight off then the yeast wont secondary ferment and your lager will end up flat.
ive just bottled a muntons gold continental pilsener myself, and i added a `hop tea` to ten bottles to see what sort of difference it makes.
although...im sure it came with an ale yeast.
i`ll be interested to hear how yours turns out.
