My beer smells bad!

Post by chorltonbrewers » Tue Mar 24, 2009 7:09 pm

Hi,
I started a new kit on sunday (Muntons Bitter) and the whole house stinks - it smells like sulphur. Is this bad?! I modified the kit slightly by boiling some hops with orange zest and I used a Safale sachet instead of the one in the kit. I'm worried that I have ruined it :(

Funny smells are par for the course.
If you are worried just taste a small amount. Dip a santised spoon/ladle/whatever into the fv and put a tablespoon or two into a wine glass. Then taste it. Partially fermented beer should taste malty and a bit sweet. If the beer is off you will know instantly. It will not just taste a bit funny, it will taste very, very bad.

Unless it makes you puke, give it a bit more time in the FV.
