Good Lager Kit?

Post by blankfrank » Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:18 am

I'm starting to think about getting some lager on for summer BBQ's etc, have not done a lager kit before any suggestions and if you suggest a single can would you use DSM /DSM and glucose or just glucose?

Cheers

Geordie Lager kit with a bag of Beer Kit Enhancer. it'll be about £13 from Wilkos. shove it in 2 litre pop bottles and leave it for as long as you can. good summer bbq supping. if you want to spend a bit more Coopers lager kit, again from wilkos. (Geordie £8, Coopers £10 from wilkos)

chopperswookie, was reading this thread and noticed that you add hops for flavour and aroma,do the geordie kits not stand up on there own and lack a bit of flavour or is it just a personal preference mate..

bit of both. kits seem to not have that hoppyness i'm after. so recently i have been hopping myself. the geordie lager has a light continental look to it but not the taste. i used saaz on me last one to see the impact it will have. if you fancy a carlsberg/carling type brew just add BKE. if you want something more hop it your self. last year i did a geordie with styrians, very nice! bitter punch to it. very different to ferming it with just sugars/malts.

I recently did coopers mexican cerveza with kilo of beer enhancer and did everything it said on the tin. it came out pretty well but has a slight almost fruity finish (although you dont notice it when you've chucked a wedge of lime in) but other than that its very good. think i'll be doing it again soon before summer but with lager yeast, possibly steep some hops in, and possibly reduce the size to up its kick. i think it came out around 3.7% for me and i like my lagers to be somewhat stronger. anyways would definitely reccomend it for some easy summer drinking

bob check the forum out. i am sure someone has done the coopers mexican with light spraymalt and golden syrup. the inert sugars in golden syrup will definatly top up the alcohol levels. i did a geordie lager with golden syrup and it turned out just under 4%

Thanks for advice and i have gone for a Cooper's kit, only problem is I've bought draught! which although it looks like lager is actually a bitter!!! Oh well; I think it will still go down well, next time I'll read the label. Thinking of using 500g DSM and 500g sugar.
