Yeast & DME Storage?

Post by redskinweasel » Sun Apr 12, 2009 10:04 am

Hi, I have just bought a load of yeast sachets (SAFALE 04) for my next brews and to ensure I have spares as recommended on this forum.

As money is really tight, I was just wondering which way is best to store the yeast. The packs just say cool dry place which is a bit vague, so I just wondered if anyone could recommend how I store it for optimum performance (i.e. refridgerate)?

I have also purchased quite a bit of spray malt and wondered if I should be putting this in the fridge also?

I know these are probably stupid questions, but I'd be gutted if all the gear had gone off by the time I get round to using it.

Thanks

Jerry Cornelius

I store my yeast in the fridge and spray malts in the larder. If they're opened (the DME, that is), I put them in an air-tight container as well. So far I've had no problems.

Cheers Jerry,

Will move the yeast in to the fridge. The DME will probably be fine under the stairs then as it has not been opened yet.

Cheers

I keep yeast in the fridge, but you can keep dried yeasts longer term in the freezer, just allow it to come back to room temperature before use. I Also keep hops and open malts in the freezer.
