Good kit larger

Post by Waffty » Thu Apr 16, 2009 9:55 pm

Not a huge fan of the bubbly juice but always make sure I've got a corny full for the summer, for my mates. So this time around, I bought a Coopers Lager kit, which I customised & after fermenting, it tastes the 'dogs'.

So here's what I did :-

1) Measured our 2.5l of water & popped it into a pan
2) Heated water to around 40c & added 50g of dried malt extract
3) Bought pan to the boil & added a muslin bag, containing 10g of loose Hellertau hops & boiled for 30 mins
4) 15mins into the boil, I added a second muslin bag, containing 10g of loose Saaz hops & boiled for 15 mins
5) Removed both bags & added contents of pan to FV
6) Pitched yeast into 100g of water at 26 degrees C & left it (without stiring for 10mins)
7) Added coopers kit to FV.
8 ) Added 500g of light dried malt extract
9) Added 500g of brewing sugar
10) Mixed, mixed & mixed some more
11) Mixed yeast into a paste & added 1/2 spoon of yeast vit.
12) Check temp of yeast starter & Wort, both at 24c, so pitched yeast.
13) Set temp controller to 20c & left.
14) After 4 days, the OG of 1049, had dropped to 1010 & tastes good enough to drink then ....

I'll leave it in the FV another week, before racking to a corny, force carbonate & mature for several (at least 6 weeks).

Nice ........
Fermenting - Nothing
Conditioning - Nothing
Drinking - Tea
Planning - Everything, if only I had the time ... !!

I have just bottled one of these kits, followed a similar pattern. I just added boiling water to the tin, gave it a stir and put 30g ish of saaz hoops in, left for about 20 mins and then added to the wort. It also smelled good, looking forward to it over the summer. Made a pleasant change making the kit from the 6 hour All Grain brew. I have also made up an the coopere APA kit which I used East kent Goldings and saaz hops for. Looking forward to summer.
