Fermenting Vessels

Just thinking, plastic is nice and easy to sterilise, as is copper or SS, but has anyone tried using other materials for FVs such as slate or Oak? Wondering whether these materials would impart a little something to brews.

Very bling but it's inert, but it wouldn't add anything flavour wise.

Glass is another option, not very bling or practical in my view but a lot of peeps over the pond use them, they're called carboys iirc.

no, your right,My Gold FV is rubbish ...thats why I never use it. :D
it allways seems to be wooden vessels that impart the most famous flavours.

Although I have a thermos flask that has a "character" of its own..

5 gallon jobs? They have them in a hardware superstore near us and I think I see them in Brew Genie's shop in Shrewsbury too, but again defeats the object as it's inert.

Yes you are right about wood but I am sure I heard of one of the Yorkshire breweries using slate, having written that I am off to google Yorkshire Square as that rings another bell.

Don't all thermos develop their own flavour, mine has a subtle hint of mulligatawny soup

Apart from infection?

Seriously though, the beer is in the FV for only a relatively short time so the chances of the vessel imparting flavours is proportionately low. OTOH maturing the beer for 6 months in oak casks ...
Best wishes

Infection? Damn right! I just can't see any point. We use plastic because it's just so what it is; Cheap. Reliable. Tested.

As a matter of interest; Decades back, I bought a brand spanking new wooden keg. Cost me ridiculous money. But, who wouldn't dream of serving a pint of their own from a wooden barrel?

Dream is all I ever did. Once the Barman at my local started trying to explain the inerrant intricacies of managing Real kegged ale? Sod that!

My point is though is this; That uber expensive little thing was actually lined with WAX! See? That's how they over came so many potentially nasty little problems with actual beer touching real wood. Wax the inside of a wooden, 5G bucket? Then add hot water :?

Just go with a 'white', plastic bucket, mate. It's only a place to leave wet stuff for a bit, after all.
