I tend to find that unscrewing the cylinder until it stops discharging but leaving i still on for a few seconds helps, often the blast of gas is enough to chill the valve so much it can discharge again for a second otherwise.

I recall using the horrible little bulbs of CO2, I had a faulty valve and one bulb discharged into my hand one night whilst trying to inject it into a keg, not very pleasant.
