newbie. Have I gone wrong???

Post by johnston » Fri May 01, 2009 6:56 pm

I've made up a coopers European lager yesterday but it doesn't seem to be doing much. It is building pressure in the FV but the air lock isn't bubbling as much as I expected.

I used BKE instead of sugar and bottled water instead of tap but from reading on here I was expecting a bit of an eruption whereas its being very calm. The room its in stays a constant 15c (one of the reasons why I went for that kit).

Have I done something wrong or just being paranoid??

cheers, Iain

At that tempreture (which is good for larger) it should be fine, but will take a bit longer to ferment. I wouldn't worry. Do you have a hydrometer? you could check the drop in gravity, if it has dropped your good. Is there foam on the top? again if there is, nothing to worry about.

Theres what I would call a light foam on top nothing extreme.

The wort was dead on 21c the temp it gives in the instructions :? :?

at 21c it should be fermenting quite rapidly(not ideal for lager)did you give it a good mix to get plenty of oxygen into ya brew before adding yeast..also check that your fv is air tight, the co 2 might be leaking out of the top and not the airlock..its just happened to me..

Have you got the instructions still ? Reason I ask, is because some lager kits come with ale yeast, supposed to be fermented at 18-24 degrees (to make it easier for most to brew indoors at room temperature). just wondering if the Coopers lager kit comes with that type of yeast. Instructions will say.
