Brupak Almondbury Old but a little bit stronger
Brupak Almondbury Old but a little bit stronger
I'm about to do my second brew and have chosen a Brupak Almondbury Old as my local homebrew shop suggested it a good alternative to Old Peculier.
Now, if that's correct I'll be happy with the taste, but I would like it to be a little bit stronger... knocking on the door of 6% if possible. (I do like Robinson's Old Tom as well, and it would be great to get to that strength).
My LHB shop suggested that I add 500g of sugar, I assume brewers sugar rather than tate & lyle and drop the volume down a couple of litres as well. Or rather I think that's what he said.
Would you guys concur or are there other options?
Thanks.

Re: Brupak Almondbury Old but a little bit stronger
sounds good to me.
im guessing this is a 3kg kit so usually no extra sugar is required.
shortening the brew length(using less water) and adding extra sugar will up the abv. you can use either brewers sugar or just regular house hold white sugar.
sometimes using regular sugar rather than dried malt extract can make a brew a bit thin but as its not a massive amount and you are already shortening the brew length it should be fine.

Alternative to "Old Peculiar" yes , similar NO WAY!
Old Peculiar is my all time favourite tipple, except for Black Dog which is my session ale. Don't get me wrong I loved the Almondbury Old but its more of a ruby bitter with defined bitter hops kicking you in the teeth. Guess that was the 15min boil of the hop pellets that I did in my brew. Have a go at it as it was in my opinion the best Kit I have ever brewed, just not an Old Peculiar. The 40 Pints still got drunk though. Just finished my last pint today, dregs of Yeast included.
Cheers

Re: Brupak Almondbury Old but a little bit stronger
Any suggestions for a Peculier-like ale?
Re: Brupak Almondbury Old but a little bit stronger
That's the one I wanted to do but my LHB didn't have it in stock... bugger!
Re: Brupak Almondbury Old but a little bit stronger
I don't know, probably as he didn't have the Old Ale in and wanted a sale. I'm beginning to lose faith in my LHBS as this isn't the first piece of duff information he's given me. As a noob it's a bit off putting.
Maybe time to venture further afield.

Thanks Chris, I shall scour the intertubes locally to find a stockist and give that a try.Chris-x1 wrote:Brupaks Brewer Choice Old Ale.
They're called brewers choice because you're given 3 options,
1 add 1kg of sugar (don't it'll be crap)
2 add 1kg of spray malt
3 add 1.5 kg of LME.
Go for option 2 to get the best flavour and make 20L to give you around 5.6%
Re: Brupak Almondbury Old but a little bit stronger
The brew seemed to go fine yesterday and it smelled lovely. I've no doubt it's going to be a cracking pint... but not Old Peculier. Still, never mind.Tequilla6 wrote:Alternative to "Old Peculiar" yes , similar NO WAY!

I got the volume a bit wrong and it ended up at just over 4.5 gallons with a starting gravity of 1053. If I can get that down to 1010 I'll be happy.

I think you would like Coopers dark ale with a kilo dme and maybe reduce the length. Its got a strong licorice flavour not unlike old peculiar.
