BKE bag split open. Is it ok to use?

Post by xpers » Sun May 03, 2009 12:27 pm

I brought a bag of BKE and a Coopers Aussie Lager from Wilkinson. As I was getting out of the car the carrier bag broke and the lager tin landed on the BKE and tore the bag. I have put the BKE inside another bag and sealed it up but I won't be using it for a few days. Two questions:

Is it still ok to use?

Can I mix it with some water and boil it to kill any possible contamination, or will this spoil the BKE?

P.S. I noted the Coopers Aussie Lager says it fine for the kit to ferment at 26C. I am a complete novice but I thought lagers where better fermented at a lower temp then most kits. Any thoughts on this?

Most Coopers kits suggest using 2 litres of boiling water to dissolve the fermentables anyway, by the time you then add 20 or so litres of cold water the temp is usually at or even below the fermenting temperature anyway, least in my experience it is.

ON the basis that my LHBS can get me (if I want it) any of the dried malts in bulk (ie huge tubs of it), I'm sure if you use it reasonably soon it will be fine.

Yes the small bags come sealed, but if you are making beer on a large scale, you'd have vats of this stuff.

Dissolve in boiling water and you'll be fine

it will be fine. Tis a rare organism that likes to exist in the dry unless it's in spore form and won't be killed by being boiled to death....

Heat is your friend.
