How much water
How much water
Hi,Have just registered as a new member and am about to start making my first brew which is a Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge (my favourite drink when on holiday at Wells next the sea).My question is when you have added the 6 pints of boiling water to the extract from the tins do you add 30 pints of cold water or do you include the contents of the tins in the 30 pints.Hope this is not a stupid question
Re: How much water
It's not totally critical to be super accurate, but the volume of water will affect the strength of your brew.
Your bin may well have markings on the side too as a guide (they are often out), and I tend to brew slightly lower than the 40 pint recommendation (anywhere between 35 and 38 pints worth)
But in answer, add the water as per the instructions, don't include the volume of the kit malt. If you want to make 40 pints as per the kit ,put it all in, if you want a touch more strength, try taking it down to total 35 or 36 pints.
Just make sure that if you add LESS water to the FV after the wort gone in, the temperature of the final liquid will be warmer - make sure the temp is down to the tolerance of your yeast (and falling) before adding!

Re: How much water
Nelson's seems to be a 36 pint kit so you'll need enough cold water to bring it up to that volume i.e., somewhat less than 30 pints. (I'd guess something like 24 pints).
Best wishes

Good tip. Will do that myself with my bin once emptied( mark 40 off pints off yourself using water first for greater accuracy)
Re: How much water
Thanks for replies, yes Nelsons Revenge is a 36 pint kit so what I will do is put in the 2 tins of extract, add 6 pints of boiling water then make up to 36 pints using a pre determined mark on fermenter.
