Vinegar smell
I kegged my coopers draught yesterday and to my horror when I opened the lid on my fv I got a whiff of vinegar
I tasted a sample and it tasted fine the smell was coming from the lid where all the gunge had dried on. Could it be something to do with the piece of metal coathanger thet I use to suspend my immersion heaters with? I have never had this happen before.

Re: Vinegar smell
John; If it Tastes fine? It probably Is fine
When a brew goes over, one taste and ye'll seriously wish to god ye'd never put it in ye mouth!
Don't get too hung up on smells, even tastes, as the wort does its stuff. Wait till it's finished. Then it should smell and taste recognisably like beer.

Re: Vinegar smell
John, I had the EXACT same thing with a Coopers Bitter, smelt, and tasted like vinegar. Was just about to pour it down the drain, but posted on here. Was advised to leave it unless it tastes EXACTLY like swigging from a bottle of vinegar. It turned out FINE, took 3 weeks for the brew to come into it's own, the vinegar smell/taste vanished.
Re: Vinegar smell
i've found that you get some quite common "off" smells until such times as you get it in the barrel/bottles.
I have given up worrying at the vinegar smells generated from kits and extract stuff that i've done because there can be quite a lot of it!
Glad it's tasting ok - that's all that matters

Re: Vinegar smell
Also the Coopers instructions say some crap like "the f.v lid will not need sanitising, just cleaning". The froth comes up and touches the lid, if it isn't sanitised can lead to a problem.
Re: Vinegar smell
The CO2 that the fermenting beer produces has a sharpness to it that is quite unpleasantly acidic if you breathe it in. If the beer smells "vinegary" immediately after opening the lid, but not otherwise, it's probably CO2 you are detecting.
You'll know soon enough if the beer is infected.
