Coopers Aussie Lager - use the yeast or get a lager yeast?

Post by xpers » Tue May 05, 2009 11:26 am

I keep reading that the yeast with the Coopers Australian larger is an ale yeast that ferments too quickly at a high temperature. With this in mind should I use the provided yeast or buy a lager yeast instead???

Any tips greatly received!

Why does it come with an ale yeast anyway? Is it because it comes from Australia and it so hot there, so it's difficult to brew at a lower temp?

Hi xpers
I've just brewed a Coopers Lager with the supplied yeast at 18 deg. It fermented well in about 5 days and has produced a really nice drink. The best lager i've made so far. cleared in a week and the few I drank are loverly. I'll be doing the Coopers European Lager soon with the supplied Lager yeast at a lower temperature of 13 deg. Coopers use great yeast, Im sure youve seen the eruptions on some of the other posts.
As Chris has mentioned its more a decision of what temp you are going to ferment at.

Thanks for the feedback.

The temperature in the kitchen is usually between 18-21C so I will give it a go and see.

I would guess then that the people who have had issues with this kit/yeast perhaps let it ferment at the higher end of the 18-27C margin recommended, and that is why it fermented quickly and didn't turn out as expected.

Cheers

i just did one with youngs lager yeast ad fwiw the nice man at youngs said it would be fine up to 15 degrees.
seems to be fine down the cellar between 13 and 16/17 degrees. especially as it was only a 5g pack.

I'd use S23 if you can maintain the right temperatures ( sub 15 degrees). I used it once at around the 18 mark (which the pack said was ok) and ended up with a strange buttery taste to my lager.
