Pre-boiling water

Post by mshergold » Sun May 10, 2009 11:01 am

Hi. I'm helping someone make up their first kit (a Woodfords) tonight and have a boiler so was going to boil the water now as I normally would to get rid of the chlorine for my extract brews and will then add campden powder just before making up the kit. It's just struck me, though, that it might be better to use water straight from the tap, rather than water that's been been hanging around all day uncovered? I REALLY don't want this to go wrong! Any thought appreciated.

You only really need to add 1/2 a crushed Campden tablet to 25 L of water and it will deal with the chlorine and chloromines without the need for boiling and it works almost immediately :)

As pdtnc said, but water left around overnight is going to be fine also, keep it covered to prevent crap getting in and you're set. Personally the campden tab route is my fave.

does it add any taste to the water using this method? my tap water is cr*p so i use bottled water but my friend is going to start brewing so i was going to advise him to use campden if it doesnt add any nasty taste to the water.

Nope, half a crushed campden tablet will impart no flavours, it'll only remove those you don't want. Simply crush a tablet between two tablespoons and put half of the resulting powder into whatever vessel you've put your tap water into then brew away.

I used Campden (well, actually a tiny pinch of Sodium Met - same thing, and cheaper than tablet form) for my water. Also, if you can get the water into the FV under pressure and from a height (ie through a hose, or blasted into a jug and poured in vigourously) that too will help de-chlorinate - releases Ch as gas. That's an old tip from tropical aquarium days.

You can always make a 10% (w/w) solution of Sodium Met in Water and then 5ml (or 1 teaspoon) of solution = 1 camden tab.

Easy to add with syringe and is instantly soluble.
