Last Friday, I set the fermenter going. After 12 hours I had the traditional white foamy head, over the last few days the head did not dissapate but turned an ugly creamy foam a bit like the inside of a cadbury's cream egg but slightly yellowed. The recipe was a Young's Definitve Bitter, 1kg Dark DME, 500g light hopped DME, Centennial and Progress hops, 450g of Crystal Malt steeped at 70C for 40 mins, 25 L of tap water pretreated with 1 crushed campden tablet. I used Safale US 05 as I'd ordered some by accident, I usally use 04.
The smell is fine, I haven't tasted the wort, will I die?
Creamy head in the FV
Re: Creamy head in the FV
I can assure you it's fine, US-05 produces an impressive creamy looking head which can actually last well after fermentation has finished. It's just the nature of the particular yeast.
I have used US-05 loads, it's possibly my favourite yeast, it might take a while to clear but I've had some cracking brews with it, lets all the hop notes come through unhindered, and I have had crystal clear beer from it.
