Muntons Wheatbeer kit, much improved

Post by jat147 » Sun Jun 28, 2009 3:20 pm

I just thought I'd share my experience of brewing the same kit twice.

A Muntons Wheatbeer kit - Made one a few months back with high-ish hopes of a credible wheatbeer, but was a little disappointed with the result.
It just seemed a bit weak & too watery, and lacking in carbonation and good colour.

Not to be put off, I decided to try again. This time rather than just adding a kilo of sugar to make 23l I tinkered a bit.
I had some candi sugar left over from a Brewferm batch I'd just made - a nice yellow colour that I made myself.
Used 500g of the candi sugar and 500g spraymalt.

A totally different drink is the result - really good head retention, and a really authentic colour that is quite orange looking.
The other difference is the volume - I only made 18l the second time which is 10 bottles less than before, but each one of the batch is
much better than before.
Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here, but a little extra cost has been well worth it.

I added light candi sugar to my first wheat beer and was really pleased with the result. The second one I`ve just made I added some steeped choc malt and a shed load of cascade hop pellets and dried curacao peel and I`ve ended up with a dark, grapefruit flavoured wheat beer, its a bit strange but not bad on a hot day. I wouldnt make it again though.

I'm bottling a muntons wheat beer today. I made it using 500g spray malt, 350g maltodextrine (brewferm kit enhancer) and about 250g candi sugar. I chucked in some chilis for fun. Had a chili wheat beer a few years ago which was great.
