kit wheat beer

Post by tadbrewer » Wed May 27, 2009 12:24 am

any advice/recommendations for making a wheat beer from kit?

...had a look at coopers wheat beer with a combo of 500g light spray malt and 500g wheat spray malt..using w06 safale yeast??? after fermentation, conditioning in bottles to a lager standard carbonation...

with the wheat beer does it require low fermentation temps or would a 15-20c be adaquate...?

much love

thanks chris

...anyone else had any luck with this type of kit???

went for a pint of sam smiths wheat beer (£2.40) today and it has definalty convinced me too do this type of beer, whether its now or when i get my all grain brewery!!! i think this homebrewing has turned me into a bit of a beer ponce!!! no longer will a pint of 'lager' surfice, especailly at £2.55 a pint!!!!

i made the coopers brewmaster selection wheat beer and enjoyed it. Used the yeast in the kit and attempted to carbonate in a top tap keg but with little success, will definitely be bottling lager and wheat beer from now on, lesson learnt !

I wouldnt say it was overly wheat beery...... it was a lovely pint and the missus loved it but it wasnt to me instantly recognisable as a wheat beer. I think the definite lack of carbonation probably caused this though, it definitely wants lots of bubbles runnin through it !!

Very nice tasting, cant genuinely compare it to anything else ive tasted, but very nice

despite my carbonation problems it cant have been that bad coz 40 pints got supped in no time at all and im far from a big drinker !

Enjoy !

Coopers brewmaster wheat.
Made up with 500gms wheat DME, 500 gms light DME, 300 gms light Belgian candi sugar. Boiled up a Saaz hop tea bag for 10 minutes or so with 20 gms each of dried curacao peel and crushed coriander seed. Topped up FV to 20.5 litres and added a pack of rehydrated WB-06 yeast.
Bottled after 10 days and was drinking it a week after that, best kit I`ve done so far and I`ve just got another on the go but substituted the light DME for medium, left out the candi sugar and steeped 250gms of crushed chocolate malt instead to hopefully get a Dunkel style.
Really good kit that you can play around with to alter flavours once you know what you want from it IMHO.

Perhaps relevant to the OP and certainly of interest to me is which kits or what kinds of tinkering are better for making the different types of wheat beer. I'm thinking primarily German weissbier vs Belgian witbiers.

cheers guys...

think im going to go for coopers brewmaster wheat beer, 500gms wheat DME, 500 gms light DME and use the WB-06 yeast..never rehydrated yeast, is ther an improvement by doin so, or does it just decrease the time with which fermentation occurs...

nt sure about adding the corriander or orange peel yet, or even hoping it...i do have some fuggles style 'tea bag' but not sure about tha yet, mite just see how it holds up it self...

going t get some coopers carbonation drops cos the levels of carbonation i got with them when i did my first lager was fantastic...and as u say say a wheat beer needs bubbles..

got a cupboard in my garage which stays at around 16oC which i feel will be adaquete for fermentation

wont be doing it till i get bk from gran canaria, but i'll keep ya updated, thanks guys!!

I`m not convinced the coriander or peel came thru to be honest. I think you`ve got the right idea to keep it simple if its the first wheat kit you`ve done, its a perfect summer drink and is ready in no time.

In Germany Weizen beer is almost always bottled, I hardly ever saw it on keg in my time working there.
