I spoke with Coopers in Australia about this when i did kits.
They basically said that there is less yeast taste and more beer taste after around 3 months in the bottle/keg.
I diid a muntons gold kit and found that much better although if i knew then what i know now i would have used another yeast and not the one that comes with the kit.
I have now moved over to AG, and although it takes longer, it costs about as much once ou have the equipment and the beer is fully drinkable after just a couple of weeks in the keg. Naturally the longer you leave it the better it gets but its so hard!!!!

Really, it's not just about getting alcohol as quick as possible.
Beers take time to mature, realistically none of my kit beers are good until they're 6-8 weeks old, before that they're too sweet and more malty than beery, after about 6 weeks they start to taste really good.
