what to do with the left over goop after fermentation?
what to do with the left over goop after fermentation?
are there any uses for the layer of sludge (dead yeast i assume) at the bottom of the fermenter? does it make good fertilizer or something perhaps? it seems a waste to throw it away.

I find it does a great job when thrown on top of my composter. It seems to speed up the breakdown bigtime.

The leftovers are good for the garden, just don't try feeding it to your dog. Not that I would have any experience at doing that mind you.

Throw another brew on top, failing that as above mine goes on the compost heap.

I read somewhere you can freeze a bit of it to use for a future batch of beer. Is that true?

You can't freeze it, not without going through a whole load of steps at least, but if you are going to use it in a couple of weeks you don't need to, see this excellent guide:

Plus there have been several discussions on this subject on The Brewing Network and Basic Brewing Radio quite recently, I always do this for liquid yeasts, never bothered with dry as yet.

Best thing to do with it is sprinkle it with a bit of salt, get a spoon and eat it. Yummy!
Nah, only joking. I wash mine down the drain....
