Very Lively Brew !!

Post by spitfire77 » Sun Oct 11, 2009 10:54 pm

So I am coming to the last few bottles of my first batch of homebrew..... :(

The kit was a youngs brew buddy bitter, made as per instructions with but with BE instead of sugar and bottled.
Towards the last half of the batch (now about 3 or 4 months old), this has been increasingly lively, very very frothy when poured. Whilst not detracting from the enjoyment of the beer, I was just wondering what the cause of this was and if anything could be done to minimise it in future brews.

Overall (as per instructions), I used 85g of sugar to prime. Is this the prob ? too much ?

All help greatly appreciated as always ..

Cheers and happy brewing (and happier drinking)

Steve

To answer part of your post, 85g is NOT too much, pretty bang on. Not use why it would get livelier, someone else may answer. Well done making it last that long, my first kit lasted 2 weeks.

as you've found them getting more and more lively, it's probably still fermenting in the bottle slowly over time, this can be slowed down by keeping them in a cool place

this happened to me a few years ago, I kept two bottles from every batch with a hope of taking them on holiday, I tried one a few weeks before we left and it gushed badly and didn't taste too good, they were all like this, it had continued to ferment and gone quite dry, maybe I shouldn't have stored them in a cupboard in the kitchen next to the oven........duh...

When I make lager I prime with 160grams and even that doesn't create gushers..

This may well be it ? , they have been kept in a brick shed (coolest area of my house), but over summer months so it hasn't exactly been cool. The taste has become more "bitter" over time but that was an improvement if anything.
