Help Beer carbonated but no head!
Help Beer carbonated but no head!
brewed a Hambleton bard old english ale, bottled it and left it for 7 days in a warm place, then placed it in a colder room for 2 weeks. the beer cleared perfectly- when i took a cap off i heard the sound of gas escaping. the beer fizzed like coca cola being poured for the first time and acted just like pop the head died. the beer was very carbonated but no head. since then i have returned it to the warmer room for 7 days then in the frdige for 2 hours but the beers the same.
Please help

Enjoy this beer for what it is and keep in mind for the next brew that high alpha hops, carafoam, wheat and proteins in general are good enhancers of beer head retention.

thats ok, but i am a little niffed cos this was a expensive dry kit and i was treating myself, i have had better brews with my pressure barrel and cheaper kits. The instructions that caame with it were misleading at the very least

Re: Help Beer carbonated but no head!
Try cooling a pint to about 10C, pouring it into a jug and then tip it into a pint glass from a height of six inches or so. This will dissapate a lot of the excess gas and create a head akin to that of a good real ale. You won't be able to pour it all in one fell swoop - pour as much as will go in the glass, wait a minute for the head to die down, then repeat. The result should be a smooth cool pint with a superb head.
Re: Help Beer carbonated but no head!
tried that and its still more like pop than beer, the beer when poured at 45 degrees fizzes straight to the top of the glass with a very large bubbly head. then the bubbles pop and the head dissappears to nothing even though the beer still fizzing like coca cola would? would leaving it to condition longer improve or is this as good as this brew will get.

Re: Help Beer carbonated but no head!
U have just started drinking this brew out of akeg & am getting exactly the same results. I wont bother with another hambleton bard kit again as is spoiling my enjoyment of the beer.

Re: Help Beer carbonated but no head!
Ensure your glassware has no trace of detergent: rinse, rinse and rinse again. At least that will be one possible cause to dismiss.

I'd agree with this one, glasses rinsed lots and lots.kfm wrote:Ensure your glassware has no trace of detergent: rinse, rinse and rinse again. At least that will be one possible cause to dismiss.
