Coopers Lager

Post by jonnyhop » Sun Oct 11, 2009 12:07 am

To be fair, it does look amazing……………

In general, this forum is such a positive, supportive environment that it has no place for the harshness of reviews. However, I have just drank some of my Coopers Lager and would like to warn others. I gave it every chance; I steeped 15g Saaz for 15 mins in the can, bottled it, matured for 4 months before trying…………………….and I may as well have bought some tins of fosters. Taste is a funny thing and opinion should be rightly divided, mine is that this pint of fizzy piss should be avoided.

hi johnny
got to be honest i made the standard lager and i wasnt that impressed, found lime or lemonade made it drinkable  but it was never going to be a pint i really enjoyed.

i have got some euro lager and even tho its better, given the three month wait i still dont love it (tho it is better than the standard) but more importantly it doesnt need the lime or lemonade to make it palatable.

ive come the conclusion that maybe im just not that bothered for the homebrew lagers and that for next summer i will just bottle some beers for the fridge any recomendations for light summer beers would be welcome :?:

Did you guys ferment at a lower temp and larger the beer at 0-3oc for a couple of weeks? Im thinking of getting a larger kit to try (doing the above) before i launch into a full AG and find that my technique is bad and ruin my ingrediants. Maybe not doing the above without a larger yeast produces the off flavors you dont expect in a larger giving bad results?

Well I am not a lager normally but my European was/is fine. made with light spray malt instead of sugar left for 3-4 months before drinking, tastes like a half decent lager should.

Light summer beer - Coopers Aussie Pale Ale steeped with dried elderflowers and goldings amd light spray malt instead of the suger, went down a storm with all my friends during the summer.

Cheers

did make the euro with a kilo of extra light spray malt and brewed it in my cellar at around 12-13 after giving it a day to set off, maybe i was expecting a lot cos its a coopers kit or maybe my taste for lagers not what it was.

edit. will give that coopers pale ale a shot thanks mog

I've made Coopers Lager amongst other brews for ages using light DME and am quite happy with them as for comparing it with Fosters well obviously we all have different tastes because I wouldn't allow Fosters in the house. Imo Coopers Lager tastes better than any crap they sell in pubs lately the last pint I had was a Stella and I had difficulty finishing it in fact I only did as not to offend the bloke who bought it for me, and swmbo loves Coopers Lager and the Stout done the Ditch way.

Like many I lack the facilities to properly lager, but I did keep it at a steady temp. It was so tasteless I doubt it would make any difference. I have also got a Coopers APA which is very lagery and slides down. I generally AG my beer but still enjoy the odd kit and will be sticking with the APA in future.

I've got a Coopers lager frementing at the mo......hope it's going to be ok!?! Made up with beer enhancer, I'll let you know how it goes.
I've done the Cooper's Aussie Lager in the past and loved it, a really full flavoured lager if you ask me!

Coopers Aussie Lager I found superb...but only after leaving it well alone for a month or so. My first sample was a bit of a let down but then...it changed into a very different beast.

I have just brewed the coopers mexican cerveza bottle it yesterday. Now i took a hydrometer reading before bottling it and i always have a smell/tast test from the trial jar in order to see how it's shaping up most of the brews ive done taste pretty raw at this stage but have always come good so i was expecting the same. I brewed it with 1kg of bke as i couldnt get light malt at the time, and even after 8 days in the FV it tastes lurvly im really really impressed and looking for to a few weeks along when i can try a chilled bottle of it.

I've done the cerveza kit myself. I made it especially for BBQ's and super primed it with 350g of sugar as I like my summer beers really cold which I find can reduce the fizz. It came out really really nice, even within 2 weeks of being bottled.

Im glad you mentioned that ive been wondering why when i pour a beer at room temp it's nice and fizzy with a good head that retains well but once i chill them they seem less fizzy and with less head. They also seem to have less suspended co2. I was wondering if heding liquid is worth trying?

I made the Coopers Lager as my first-ever batch from Cooper's beginner micro-brew kit. It uses brewing sugar (which, as a homebrew buddy of mine noted, is what prisoners drink), so it definitely comes out a bit sweet, and it certainly isn't a good strong lager. However - after about 12 weeks in the bottle in relatively cool temperatures, it tasted just fine - plus, the kit was easy to use.

I would recommend the kit to first-time brewers that want an easy kit to brew that results in beer that is definitely drinkable. I would, however, recommend using two cans of the LME and skipping the brewing sugar.
