why is youngs stout so cheap?

Post by leverton10 » Mon Sep 28, 2009 7:25 pm

i haven't got a hb shop near me that opens regularly, but i normally use wilko's for the majority of what i need.

i love stout, and have heard great things about coopers on this forum but this would mean shedding out around 25 quid for the beer kit plus msm ordering online.

i can get my hands on some youngs stout for around a tenna, is it worth the saving?

i could also get EDME's stout for the same price(ish)

would appreciate guidance on which one to get :)

thanks

Joe

I've not come across Youngs stout; but their bitter and lager kits are pretty weak IMO - horrid if brewed as per the instructions, but good value for using as bases for modification though.
I've had great results with the Edme stout (from wilko's, also!) - made up usually with 500g extra dark spraymalt plus 500g enhancer. Well worth the extra pennies, believe me.
So I can't say the Youngs will definitely be poor since I've never tried it; but I can recommend Edme for sure.

 Jesus, Joe! That sounds Harsh! Admittedly, I can't even remember what a single tin of Coopers would cost me ~ then there's the currency conversion ~ but, that does sound steep.

Can ye not go that extra mile and find a way to get yeself ~ or anybody else ~ to pick up the gear at one of the irregularly opening HBS's?

If ye " Love Stout ", I'd really like to hear what ye make of Coopers. And I suspect ye might well feel it was worth the effort too

I've just put on a Youngs Harvest stout, it's a 30 pint kit. I did use some pretty good Weyermanns Bavarian Dunkel (dark) liquid malt and a flavapak and I've also jazzed it up with some cocoa nibs, oh and some black malt as a steeping grain. The wort was nowhere near as smooth as the Coopers kit which I did very similarly recently. It's still in primary, I'm going to put it in secondary shortly and add another 200g of cocoa nibs, unfortunately I can't comment on it yet as I've not tasted, but if the wort is anything to go by, it'll be a lot heavier than Coopers. I don't think it'll be that bad.

Barm - thanks, i think ill go with the edme, its only a tenna in wilkos, so i rekon its worth a pop. any recommendations on what to add/what fermentables to use?

Ditch - ive heard your the king of coopers stout! :) ....the cans are only about 13 quid but the postage kills me! plus either msm or BKE on top(5-10?)! !!
im sure i will eventually succomb to the charges of the legendary coopers, but as im a student, its not likely to happen for a few years!unless i find a can somewhere on the off chance! if you could u'll have to point me in the right direction as regards to what i can add to an edme kit?! im in newport, south wales, and there is a hbs not far from me but ive never seen it open, but i guess it must open?! but ive been up there 4-5 times in the past 2 months and always shuttered up :? they must do most of their business through ordering?! i guess there would be a shop in cardiff but i have no idea where and its a nightmare to park in town! #-o !

Eoin - sounds like it could have some potential then. i think i may try it at a later date, i like to have variety in what i drink, even if it is the same type(stout). if you could keep me posted as to how it turns out that would be great.

thanks all for your help

Hiya Joe,

The homebrew shop in Newport you refer to is Beer and Winecraft in Clarence Place. It closed over a year ago but operates via the telephone from St Julians, about a mile away. Just ring Newport (01 633) 255 595. They are usually very helpful, though it would be very useful if they could update their website to indicate they no longer trade from the shop. If they haven't got what you need in stock they can order it but you may have to buy it in bulk. This could mean six cans rather than just the one.

The local alternative is Cellars on Cowbridge Rd in Cardiff (two miles west of the city centre) which stocks everything you could possibly need and it's fairly easy to park. Have a look at their website.

As for stout kits I can recommend Edme Dry Irish Stout and Muntons Connoisseurs Export Stout. I made both using just 500 grams of dry malt extract & 500 grams demerara. I'm about to start a Coopers stout soon with medium dry malt extract.

thanks very much cwrw gewnt! i thought they must trade online/on the phone. but whats the point in them keeping the shop premises?!

do you use the cellar shop then? as i said, wilkos has all the equipment i need but i wanted to check whether edme was worth a brew! :)

i think ill give them a bell, but the 'cellar' option looks promising, do they open normal shop hours? i think im goin to get a edme stout on possibly thursday/friday! i wanted to do the stout before my current coopers bitter but i read on the forums that coopers are easy to get results with, and thought it would be best to walk before i could run so to speak!

Hang one - £13 for a tin of Coopers Stout online?

I don't know where you're looking but I get my Coopers for 9.99 a tin - I know that there's delivery but what I do is wait till I have enough cash to buy a load and then order enough to get free delivery - money is then 100% beer!
