Hello,
I am yet another newbie to homebrewing and recently set off with my first homebrew a Woodforde's Wherry kit fro wilko's. I have read on here dry hopping is popular to add body and a more hoppy flavour.
I have a few questions regarding dry hopping if anyone would be so kind to help :
- Looking at my local shop's website (brewmart) I can see hops labelled as "finishing hops" and hops in another section just labelled "hops". Is there a difference? Can some be used only for dry hopping?
- I want to start another brew off an Admirals Reserve. Is dry hopping recommended with this one and if so does anyone have any advice on which hops and how much to use?
Many thanks in advance

I would use 24grams of the Goldings or Fuggles. Dry hopping will not give you "body" you can add some dextrine for body. Dry hop for a good 10 days to get your moneys worth.

Hello,
Thanks for that, are there different types of dextrine and can you advise how much, when and how this is added?
Many thanks

Don't add anything for "body" to a 3kg kit, it'll have plenty as it is, you'll upset the recipe if you do.
If you've not had the reserve before I'd be wary of dry hopping it, it already has a pack of hop extract that you add to the fermenter..do you think it needs more hops?

Hello thanks for the reply.
Yes, I set the Admiral's Reserve kit off yesterday and it has hops powder sachet with it so I guess no need for the dry hopping.

One more question re: dry hopping if someone would be so kind?
I have put the hops in a muslin bag and put into the pressure barrel with the Wherry at the same time that I syphoned it from the fermenting bin. It is now sat in a warm place for the next week or so.
Do I leave the hops in there until the end, til it has finished and contents drunk, or do I need to take the hops out after a week before it goes somewhere cool?
My local brew shop said that it wouldn't be good to have to take the top off of the pressure barrel and let the gas out just to get the muslin bag out and that the dry hopping should be done at the fermenting stage. As I am new to this I am unsure and dont want to spoil the Wherry!
Many thanks in advance.

You can leave it in there if you wish, a lot of people dry hop in their kegs.
