Hi all,
firstly everyone, please forgive my ignorance but what is wherry? i've seen so many differant posts about it and as i'm new to brewing i really am curious as to what it actually is. please forgive my ignorance and enlighten me...?
Thanks. D
It's a particular beer kit based on a beer brewed by Woodforde's Brewery in Norfolk. It has a reputation as being very nice, I've currently got one fermenting now...
I wasn't particularly impressed with my wherry it never cleared and was very bitter compared to a pub bought pint of wherry. I much prefer the brupaks Fixby Gold.
The key to wherry is ignoring the "ready in 14 days".
Do the kit and ferment in an FV for 7 days. Then move the beer to a secondary keg with some priming sugar. Place in the warm for a week and then place in the cold/cool for 5-6 weeks.
I used the kit on my first brew and took a small 1/2 espresso taster every 4 days or so. The initial taste is not very good, but after a month in the secondary the taste is better and after 6-8 weeks the taste is superb with a creamy head.
I would also ensure you've dechlorinated if you've used tap water otherwise the final beer will have a TCP taste. Todo this just put a crushed campden tablet into the tap water and leave for 15 minutes before adding the extract or yeast.
