Looking for premium kit like Londons pride, Bathams, Banks's

Post by Waffty » Fri Jun 27, 2008 11:03 am

Hi,

I've just racked (to keg) my third brew, a Milestone Lions Pride kit & whilst I'm happy that the brew has gone well, I'm not certain about the taste. Don't get me wrong, having just read the tasting notes again in detail (yep, should have read them sooner  . ) it pretty much matches the notes, I'm just not sure it's to my taste i.e hint of lemon

So for brew number four, I'd ideally like a premium kit (3kg of extract), that produces a brew similar to Fullers London pride, failing that, a Banks's bitter or Bathams bitter similar brew, would do this Black country brewer nicely

Thanks in advance.
Darren.

Hi

I was after a London Pride, so was advised by the homebrew shop to go for Muntons Gold Victorian Bitter.

Its still fermenting as it was a real slow start, I had to pitch extra yeast to get it going. It's pretty dark and smells nice, full flavour etc.

God know what it'll taste like though!

If you're really after the Fullers flavour then it's mostly down to the yeast they use. Sadly you can't get that yeast in dried form (there's a suggest for Fermentis Safale) but you can buy it in liquid form. It is more involved to use and is a lot more expensive.

Popped into my local homebrew shop, Harris's of Lower Gornal, Dudley i.e those of Harris Filter fame & makers of Beer Bright finings and after a little browsing, settled for a Woodfords Wherry, as I know a few on here have used them.

Whilst speaking to the lady in the shop, she advised that Woodfords (or whoever produces their kits), also product the Black Country 'own' brand 3kg extract kits that Harris's sell & from what I could see, Harris's own brand kits sell for £8, which could be a real bargin.

So I'll give Wherry a go & pop back for a Black Country kit, as at £8 for a 3Kg extract, can't be bad.

Thanks for the posts.

Hi All

I hope someone can help me - I'm afraid I'm new to this forum stuff

I had a customer come into our shop and ask for a kit that resembles 'London Pride'. I had heard the the Brupaks London Bitter was a close match, but when I showed it to the customer he wasnt happy as he wanted a 40 pint kit rather than a 20 pint one, and he was put off about the instructions being all about the brubox, which wasnt what he wanted to use (althoutgh he accepted that you could brew it in conventional kit)

Are you saying the Lions Pride from Milestone is a reasonable equivalent ? We have that one in stock so it would be easy to keep him happy, otherwise I'll need to order something in for him.

Many thanks in advance

Dean

I've done a Neslon's Revenge that I think tastes quite like London Pride. I found it using Beerbase

Edit: Link removed in accordance with forum rule.

Just type in the beer you're trying to match and it comes up with kits that people think taste similar. It's based on what people think from making the brews themselves, so may not be 100% acurate, but I think it's quite good.

I think their idea of 'tastes like' reviews is a good one, the problem I see is that it seems Woodfordes Wherry seems to taste like everything from an IPA to a Stout according to the reviews!

I'm not saying you have to use their website to buy anything- that's a personnal choice and I'd rather support my local hbs than buy off the web. I just think the idea of their beerbase search engine is a good one and worked for me.
