Do I Put The Fermenting Bin On Tight ?????

Post by Andy Hird » Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:00 pm

I’m just about to start my first ever homebrew. I’m doing a Muntons Connoisseur Export Pilsner Lager, and want to know if I snap the lid down tight on the fermenting bin, or leave it loose ?
If the lid is snapped down tight, do I need an air lock on the lid ? or can I make do with just drilling a small hole in the lid ?
Cheers
Andy

You don't need an airlock really.

I think this is one that really needs Sticking. I mean; How many times a week can we answer this question?

But, then again; No one reads Sticky's or FAQs anyway ..... :(

Be handy if the kit producers started covering this in their basic instructions.

Or, maybe we could have an entrance lobby with the dead basics posted. Ye have to tick to say ye've read them before ye can start posting. Tick the box, ask a basic question straight away and ye entitled to a damn good cyber kicking  How's that sound, lads?

Hi Andy and welcome to the forum! Fermentation will provide a protective layer of CO2 on top of your lager, so snap the lid around as far as possible while leaving a small gap to allow excess CO2 to escape.

Welcome Andy. As said leave a small gap to vent the bucket and it will be fine.

Ditch, good point mate, I know you don't mean to make Andy feel bad and I am sure he has read all you said and taken it the same way as me  Yes it would be good to have the very basics as an entry condition. It can be a lot to take in at first but soon becomes old hat. Some stuff we do must seem like a huge hurdle to the new brewer and dare I say becomes a source of iritation going over the same basic stuff as you said. But we still do!!

By the way I still aint done the Coopers stout. It's been sat here for ages winking at me every time a walk past it

I'd never set out to make Anyone feel bad. Not the way I am. But, I reckon I have just the thing here to make You feel just that little bit pressured!

Something Coopers sent me. It's like a tiny little 'credit card sized mouse mat'. It depicts a bloke whose expression clearly demonstrates he's had the bright idea of the century. The wording around him says:

" Improve Your Home ~ Make Beer In It!!! "

I have that sat atop my microwave. Right next to the freezer, which I use as a work top. Fact is, I can't even make a cup of tea without this idiot beaming out his suggestion! Bloody works too! If I haven't got something in the pipe line, I can't stand to look at him

I could scan it for ye? Pin it where ye can't miss it and he'll soon drive ye to get that Coopers on. Just drove me to getting my Coopers Dark Ale in. Now, as I try to fix my dinner, he'll be on my back about the Irish Stout

Clever sods, those sales people at Coopers. They know how to press ye buttons

Ditch, I don't believe YOU need any pressure to make more stout  I will probably do it along side my next AG brew as I have 2 empty FVs

Ha ha! I can feel all superior now then; Because I had two FV's sitting there too. Now I've just the one ~ but I got tired of all the sanitising I'd been doing, and had to feed the creatures, so I jacked for the evening after the Dark. Better than making mistakes

Anyway, just for you ~ and because I couldn't resist it! ~ Here's the monkey on my back:

Shame it's not a pint of stout he has there. But it still gets through to me 8)

ditch was it your christmas gift from coopers for all the stout you buy? or have they offered you shares in the company and they are being fed-ex'd as we speak.

(5hit shares and beer, how long will it take for someone to mention that scotish independant that makes strong stuff who's name escapes me :D )
