Ruined FV?

Post by chairmanmaw » Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:31 pm

Hello all,

I have made a complete school boy error while drilling a hole to fit my new tap on to an FV. I drilled the hole the size of the diameter of my grommet, instead of the diameter of the middle of the grommet. Feel free to laugh #-o

I've been looking around for something to use to plug my hole instead of trying to get a different tap (etc).

Anyone got any ideas? I'd rather not have to chuck my FV/get a new one, but will if necessary.

Thanks!

Maw

That sounds quite terminal. Do you know if you can buy the tap like fittings as a stop?

Oh well, I will have to buy another. Cheers Chris.

Pop into your local plumbers merchant and see what they have. They other option is to plastic weld it. I would guess the plumbers will have some sort of tap or blanking plate

 Grim, Maw. But, never say die! Get hold of a similar, discarded bucket and cut a couple of patches out of that. Drill the right sized holes through those and silicone them over the big hole. Inside and out.

For gods sake, thoroughly 'water test' the job, before committing five gallons of the good stuff to it. But, it's worth a shot, isn't it?

If ye worried about the silicone being 'Food Grade'? Ask in the pet shop for some Dow Aquarium Sealant. If it won't trouble Marine fish? It won't hurt you, that's for sure! But, I suspect that stuff's the same as the hardware shops gear. Just costs three times the price because they can get away with it!

I've used the normal gear and made tanks for all sorts of exotic and fragile amphibians. Never a spot of bother with it

Cheers Ditch!

I will give that a go. I did think about those grommets which act as stoppers but doubt they would take the pressure.

I will certainly learn from this mistake!

try using a rubber stopper that doesnt have a hole, just jam it in from the inside & hopefully the weight of the water will hold it tight in place, if it doesnt work its not expensive or labour intensive
