Hi Folks!
Bit of a newbie, just on my 3rd brew. 1st was Admirals Reserve, bottled and tasting very nice after 4 weeks. 2nd Edme irish stout, 2nd week in a pressure barrel and I had a sneaky Half yesterday and it seems like good stuff...but for something different just started 15 litres of Brewferm Tarwebier so it could be ready for the summer (fingers crossed), has anyone tried this kit? does it work well?

I did this kit last year using 500g wheat spraymalt and 250g Brewing sugar,
It turned out rather nice.....eventually. At first taste (6 weeks) it had a bit of a tang to it. But it improved greatly with age (the longer you can keep your hands off it the better it'll taste - last few bottles circa 6 month vintage were v.nice!). Taste was more like a Belgium type beer rather than a cloudy wheat beer (certainly nothing like a Franziskanner Heffe / Erdinger ) but turned out good enough that I'll definately make again !

That sounds promising then. I just made it up with the 750g of brewing sugar as per instructions, looks like it might be best for a late Summer tipple.....I'll just have to be patient I guess.

i made this up about 2 and half months ago. tried a few bottles of it and it's very nice but i can tell it's definately improving and worth leaving most of it for a while longer.

IMHO, this is one of those beers i find to be best almost as soon as they're carbonated. I find the same with the other Wheat-beers I've tried.

What was alcohol % onthe Admiral's Reserve? Did you make it as per the instructions w 23L of water?

I'm not sure.....I was so eager to get started that when I got the kit I forgot to take the OG, but the FG was 1012. the instructions on the kit says to bottle when the fg is constant below 1020 and they quote an alcohol content of 4.5% but to be honest I dont think its anywhere near as strong as that....but on the plus side it has a good flavour and a nice bitter finish and seems to be getting better all the time...And yes it was made up to 23 litres as per the instructions.

I`m drinking my Tarweibier now after 3 weeks conditioning and its very good. I experimented to try and make it Dunkelweizen style so I steeped 150 gms of chocolate malt and although its not come out as dark as I intended its really nice.
I`ve just ordered another Coopers wheat kit and I`m going to up the chocolate malt in that one. The last Coopers wheat I did was excellent and was drinkable after a weeks conditioning, I agree that wheat kits are good to go "fresh" but maybe the brewferms need a bit longer, their regular beers become very good after about 4 months in my opinion.

The chocolate malt sounds interesting, how do you go about adding it to the kit ? me being a bit of a newbie and all.

Next time you order some supplies get a 500 gram bag of crushed choc malt ( make sure its crushed ), it should cost around £1.50. Measure out how much you think you need, I reckon 200 grams should be about right for a standard 23 litre kit brew. You need something fine to put it in and seal, my missus works in a hospital so brings me some medical tights that I fill and tie the ends off but anything with a fine mesh will do. Fill a saucepan with a couple of litres of very hot water and drop the malt bag in and steep it for around 30 minutes, steep being put it on a low heat so that it doesnt quite boil. I just chuck it in the fermenter when I`ve added everything else and topped up with cold water and I`m about ready to aerate before pitching the yeast.

I did the tarwebier with the belgian candy - the brew was crystal clear and tasted great after 8 weeks, lots of carbonation too.
It was mroe like a "leffe" though id say. Next time id use a blend of light DME and glucose as the previous poster has suggested - there was a bit of a tang to it.
Great kit though, gonna do their raspberry beer next.

Mine didn't come out too great so far (granted its only been in the bottle for 2-3 weeks) but it tastes nothing like a wheat beer at all. More like a simple lager?? I friend did the brupaks wheat beer and that came out really nice and tasted like wheat beer should taste like.
