Newbie Question - Pressure Barrel

Post by AndyC » Fri Jan 15, 2010 2:50 pm

Hello Folks

My first brew is looking like it's ready to go into the pressure barrel. (Yorkshire Terrier - smells lovely!) Hydrometer is steady at about 1010

I plan to boil up 85grammes of light spray malt with a half pint of water, and put this into the barrel (at 20 degrees Clesius)

Do I just siphon in everything out of the FV, or do I try and leave any obvious sludge behind?

Cheers

Andy

I'd use sugar if I were you, spraymalt at this stage is a waste, it won't affect the body. Just syphon it into the sanitised barrel. The idea is to leave most of the sludge in the bucket, but some will end up in the barrel. This will be fine. Make sure you use vaseline on the barrel seals.

Yeh - white or 'cane'/'raw' sugar: just weigh out your quantity (85g is good) and luzz it straight in the sanitised keg. Pre-dissolving is unnecessary IMO (& IME too). Then siphon the brew in leaving the worst of the 'mud' behind.
