i've recently purchased a king keg. looks ideal for me but when sterilizing, i found that water could easily leak from the lid. i have to admit that i haven't lubricated it but the amount of liquid that comes out is quite a lot!
with the internet at my fingertips i've searched and searched for the reason why this may happen and i'm not sure but i think i'm missing the o ring so my questions are these:
on a king keg lid, there is a rubber ring inside. is that the o ring or is there another ring that fits on top of that. (replacement rings seem to be clear and a bit fatter than the black one in my lid.
and
if it is the o ring and i'm being a complete noob, how do i get it out. its seems to be quite firmly in there leading me to believe question one may not be that stupid after all.
any help would be marvelous.
new king keg issue?
Re: new king keg issue?
There's only one seal/o-ring/call-it-whatever.
To get it out you'll have to lever a thin screwdriver or similar under it - this risks damaging the cap/threads, and will almost certainly destroy the o-ring!!!! So do not remove it unless it is obviously damaged. You'll usually need a good thick smear of vaseline all over the presented side of the o-ring to get a half-decent seal; and generally this can't be achieved 'hand-tight' - you'll need a cap-spanner.
The other thing is - on brand-new kegs - sometimes the two halves of the body moulding aren't perfectly aligned, meaning that the sealing face of the keg's neck isn't completely flat, and there's a leak-path even with the o-ring compressed. Some fine wet'n'dry held on a flat board can rectify this.

Re: new king keg issue?
Fill you keg with water, screw the cap on correctly (make sure you haven't cross threaded it), gas it and then check for leaks......... if it's coming from the lid it's the seal(rubber ring), go to a plumbers merchant with the ring(take the lid if you're not sure and ask for a new seal(ring)..should only cost you pennies and ask them to put it in your lid, put some vaseline on it and try again....good luck
