Is this normal?

Post by milo » Wed Oct 27, 2010 9:16 pm

Hi all,
I've been an avid reader of this forum for a couple of months now. I'm fairly new to brewing! only on my third kit which is a coopers stout (ditch's style).
I'm not sure if its going ok..
I mixed everything up on sunday night fully following ditch's masterclass.

Here's where I'm not too sure.

Monday morn: Bubbling away nicely, about 1/4 inch of foam on top
Monday eve: Working away quiet aggressivly, 1/2 inch of foam with sediment starting to form at bottom of F.V.
Tuesday: I thought it was going to pop its air lock. about 1 inch of foam and a nice layer of sediment building up
Tyesday eve: Had slowed down a bit
Wednesday: Nothing, not a peep out of it. foam head had completely died down. tested gravity and got a reading of 1.016

I also tasted it and it seems ok! I have it brewing in my utility room which stays at a constant 21 deg.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour for a Ditch's style stout? :?

Thanx Milo

It sounds like a successful fermentation for any type of beer. I'd leave it a few more days and pop it into a keg, or leave it a bit longer and then bottle.

Yep that sounds perfect. Remember in the FV 10 days then keg it. and then get another one in the FV. Etc.

Great

Thanks for replies. I'm sure you can all remember the first few brews (nervous moments!)
I just thought it was all happening way too fast.

cheers
