Which Spray Malt?

Post by StrangeBrew » Thu Feb 22, 2007 9:30 pm

Which make of Spray Malt do you use with your kits?

Is there any significant difference between Muntons and Brupaks spay malt?

Also, reading the Brupaks description on Easy Brew it seems that it is hopped. Would this add more hoppy flavour or bitterness? :?

Use any make of spraymalt. Light spraymalt for lagers and golden bitters, medium and dark for darker bitters, milds and stouts etc. Any spraymalt is better than using household sugar

I use Munton's spray malt, and I find the taste of the final brew very good - it does impart an increased malty flavour to the beer which I like. 8)

I've also done a brew with John Bull liquid malt extract, but I think I prefer the Munton's dried.

I use Muntons spraymalt which I'm happy with but it is pretty expensive for what it is.

It's not cheap, but I use it because it's the cheapest spray malt I can find at £2.25 per 500g from BrewGenie.

It's a bit of a PITA to deal with as well, the second it's out of the packet it absorbs moisture and sticks to everything.

I'll certainly agree with you there!

I reckon it's the steam off the boiled water that causes me problems. I might try dumping it into cold water and bring the temperature up until it dissolves.

I get the sticky bits out of the packets by putting a bit of boiled water in, slopping it about a bit, and pouring out over the crusty bits. Mind you fingers though...

I learnt the hard way when I used it for the first time, added it to boiling water and it promptly turned in to a thick sticky lump of goo.
It dissolves far easier in warm/hot water rather than boiling.

Its a mistake you only make the once, its like you think your being clever by using a whisk, that is until you have this huge lump of stuff hiding in the balloon of the whisk.
