St Peter's IPA brewlength

Post by Halyard » Sun Apr 17, 2011 10:50 pm

I pretty much make up kits on autopilot now and didn't even read the directions on a St Peter's IPA kit and so I brewed the IPA to a length of 23 litres, as usual. Now, when searching for a kit of their Golden Ale I notice that the IPA says 'makes 32 pints'. (check St Peter's website or brewuk) But the thing is, after 18 days in the FV, racked straight to the barrel, 8 days at 20C and then to my cool shed I drew off a 'test' half pint yesterday and it was nearly clear, and tested really, really good. The bitterness and aroma was still a little rough, but I would expect that (the St Peter's kits have that extra sachet of Goldings hop oil and maltodextrin that is a great contribution, like dry hopping, but this necessitates one month's conditioning). I am wondering why the different brewlengths between their kits? Golden Ale 36 pint, IPA 32 pint Ruby Red 40 pint, yet they are all 3kg,two-can kits? I didn't check the OG on the IPA, I forgot, but it got down to 1.012, which I was happy with.

I think I'll be fine, and just have a more session ale rather than a strong IPA, but what else may be the consequences of my error? I recycled the box ages ago, does anyone have the directions handy to confirm the brewlength?

Halyard,

I can confirm that the St Peter's IPA is a 32 pint kit - I've almost finished drinking ours (we always keep the box until the beer has gone - after an earlier episode where we couldn't remember which kit we had used to make a rather splendid bitter :( :( :( ).

I have to say, it hasn't been one of my favourites - though it tasted and looked fine, there has been a bit of a tendency to suffer from mild hangover symptoms after consuming anything more than a couple of pints.

Regards,
John
