Ahh, there's nothing quite like the sight of the first head of yeast! :flip:

The Wherry's been going for 9 days now, I measured the S.G. yesterday & it's 1.021 so it's still a fair way off the the desired F.G. of 1.014 as stated in the instructions, however, I can see activity in the yeast cake at the bottom of the fermenting bin - every now and then a tiny bit of the cake seems to 'erupt' upwards, is this evidence that fermentation is still occurring ? There's no air lock on the top so I can't go by the bubbles.

Thanks Daab, I'll try that - sanitising my beer paddle as we speak !

Just thought I'd post an update

After rousing the yeast as per Daab's advice there was slightly more activity but the gravity seemed to be sticking around the 1.020 mark. I decided to add some dry beer enzyme, rouse the yeast in the bottom again & tweaked up the heat setting on the immersion heating that's dangling in the FV. This seemed to have the desired effect & there was noticably more activity. Anyway, it now seems to have steadied out at 1.012 so today I've put it in the King keg (all apart from 4 bottles that I've filled) & its now going into the bedroom for a week.
I have to say that I'm not sure it's going to taste too great, the samples that I've tried when testing with the hydrometer had a rather unpleasant aftertaste to them which I'm putting down to the fact that I didn't remove the chlorine from the water prior to making up the kit (our tap water STINKS of the stuff), also, it has been in the fermentor for longer than I had wanted (3 weeks) so I'm not sure if that will have a detrimental effect on the final taste but I'm prepared to put this one down to experience.

Anyway, on with the next kit - Fixby Gold :)
